Animals in the heat

What To Do On Extreme Heat Days

In days of extreme heat your animals can really suffer. They don’t have the same luxuries as we do, they can’t turn the cooling on or make themselves a cold drink. It’s up to us to make sure they are comfortable and safe.

What can you do to help your animal friends?

Dogs and Cats:

Keep them indoors.

Make sure they have plenty of water available.

Place ice blocks in their water dishes.

If you don’t have air conditioning, place a fan down low so they too can feel a refreshing breeze.

We shouldn’t have to say it but don’t take them for walks and don’t leave them in cars.

If you can’t bring them inside, make sure they have somewhere cooler to go like under the house of a well shaded area with plenty of water and check on them regularly over the day. Maybe check if a neighbor or friend can take them in for the day.

Rabbits and Guinea Pigs:

Keep them indoors.

Make sure they have plenty of water available.

Place ice blocks in their water dishes. Freeze bottles of water and wrap them in a towel so they can lay on them or next to them to cool themselves.

If you don’t have air conditioning, place a fan down low so they too can feel a refreshing breeze.

Birds:

Keep them indoors.

Make sure they have plenty of water available.

Place ice blocks in their water dishes.

If you don’t have air conditioning, place a fan down low so they too can feel a refreshing breeze.

If you can’t bring them inside, make sure they have some shad with plenty of water and check on them raguly over the day.

Hang shade cloth over the aviaries to protect them from the sun.

If possible you might be able to rig up a sprinkler or hose on mist to cover part of an outside aviary to give the birds an option to get wet and cool off. Make sure to change any wet grit of wet food afterwards so it doesn’t get a chance to go mouldy.
